Lin Shu's translation of occidental literature classics

文学名著的观念是因时间变化而衍变的特殊意识形态。林纾在西洋文学(主要是小说)翻译的丰富经验中建立起了自己的名著观念,主要是对古典中国诗文观念的比附和移用。林纾及其合作者的古文翻译产生了一些翻译经典(即译作名著),以及林纾翻译的一些西洋文学中的名家名著,例如莎士比亚戏剧、塞万提斯《堂吉诃德》等,显现林纾尽管遭遇了新文学群体的严厉指责,但无疑仍是介绍西洋现代文学的第一人。

As literature classics vision is a particular ideology that changes with ages, Lin Shu derived his vision of occidental literature classics by analogy with Chinese concept of classical prose and poetry and its transplant. Lin Shu and his collaborators produced a number of masterpieces of translated works in classical Chinese, of which many were renowned works of occidental literature classics, including Shakespeare＇s historical plays and Cervantes＇ Don Quixote. Although he was severely criticized by the members of New Literary group, Lin Shu was undoubtedly a most important translator of modem occidental literature.
