The Story of Hulan Town can be well regarded as the one that can best show Xiao Hong,the author＇s self consciousness as literati.With her unique prose style and from a woman writer＇s perspective,she presented us a panoramic view of the people and their life in the town,calling for the change of the national character.Though it looks like a calm river without any ripples,it is a novel of passion and turbulence.Its artistic beauty lies in at least two folds： its poem-like prose style and its use of allegory.The former defamiliarizes its language and leaves the readers with a lot of blanks to fill,and the latter helps to complete the author＇s criticism against the national character,laying bare her thinking on the society,human nature and life philosophy.
