《方舆胜览》长期以来都被视为类书。其实,从其撰述旨趣和对边疆地理的关注程度看,它是以"周知天下,得助江山"为己任的地理志。但与以往地理志所不同的是它少了四至八道、人口、贡赋等内容和对自然地理的翔实记述,而且在因依传统地志的基础上又有所创新,更加关注人物、吟山咏水的诗词歌赋及风俗等人文内容,使传统地理志的记载范围得到了极大的扩展,在文献价值上有着特殊的贡献。

Sightseeing in China has long been regarded as a book that sorts the historical materials. As a matter of fact, judged from the purport of the book and its concern about the geographical conditions of the border area, Sightseeing in China is a geographical book intending to help the emperors learn more about the geographical records of the whole country and thus be beneficial to their rule of China. But it seldom describes the frontiers of the land, the population, the tributes to the emperor or the taxes of different areas in detail as other geographical books do. Though based on the traditional form of geographical books, it pays more attention to the civilization such as the poems describing the natural landscape, the personalities and customs of different areas and so on, which greatly extended the range of the recordation of the traditional geographical books. As for the value of literature, Sightseeing in China also made special contributions.
