Apollo and Athena were two periodicals founded respectively in October 1928 and March 1931 by China's first comprehensive national art higher education institution, National Academy of Art ( later renamed as Hangzhou National College of Art), the antecedent of China National Academy of Fine Arts. Together with Shenche and Yixing, these journals witnessed the new development of Chinese art education. In sticking to the ideas of combining professional art education with social art education, advocating the reconciliation of Chinese and Western art and creating a modern art, the then National College of art, with Lin Fengmian being its leading artist, was actively engaged in implementing art education and disseminating art under the banner of "Art Movement".
