太平天国运动是中国近代史上第一次重大的内部战争,其持续时间长,造成了许多地区的人口锐减。湖州府位于战争的地理要冲,人口损失尤为严重,导致这种现象的原因是多方面的。战后为了恢复经济生产,湖州府推行"招垦"政策,来自各地区的移民大量涌入湖州。这些移民既带来了充足的劳动力,促进了经济、文化、生活的进步,亦带来了一些问题。

The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom is the first major internal war in the modern Chinese history.It lasted a long time,and therefore,the population was greatly reduced in many regions.Huzhou is situated in the important strategic location,so the population declined relatively more seriously,but this phenomenon resulted from various causes.To restore economic production after the war,Huzhou carried out a reclamation policy,and a number of immigrants from different places began to settle in Huzhou.The immigrants not only brought sufficient labor force and promoted the advancement in economy,culture and life,but also brought about some problems.
