Translation Strategies and Methods from the Perspective of Adaptation Theory:A Case Study of Yang Xianyi's Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions

Verschueren的顺应理论为从语用学的角度研究翻译提供了新的理论框架。翻译策略和方法的选择应该分别实现对宏观交际语境和微观语言语境的动态顺应。归化和异化是实现动态顺应的翻译策略,直译和意译则是翻译方法。《红楼梦》的杨宪益译本为顺应论视角下翻译策略和方法的成功选择提供了例证。

Verschueren＇s adaptation theory provides a new theoretical framework for translation study from the pragmatic perspective.Influenced by various contexts and the structural objects,the process of translation indeed represents dynamic adaptation and involves constant choices.As two macroscopic translation strategies,foreignization and domestication are chosen to adapt to different communicative contexts while literal translation and liberal translation as two microscopic methods are adopted to suit for relative linguistic contexts and the structural objects.A case study of analysing A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Xianyi from the perspective of adaptation theory is expected to throw some light on translation theories study and practice as well as translation teaching.
