Xenorhabdus and Photohabdus are entomopathogenic bacteria (EPB) which are classified taxonomically in the family of Enterobacteriaceae and possess pathogenicity to insects and symbiotic association with nematodes. Metabolites from these bacteria are insecticidal as well as antimicrobial against a variety of competitor organisms and have broad application prospects in agriculture. This review focuses on advances in identification, encoding genes and antibiotic mechanisms of the antimicrobial metabolites.
