With an emphasis on the unity and organic nature of culture and its historical influence,this article explores the relationship between literature and culture.The author argues that the study of literature and literary history must be conducted within a framework of cultural tradition.Supported by the case studies of European literature and its history,the author points out that the studies without the consciousness of European culture and its unity tend to result in 'geographic fragments and chronological fragments'.
