The remaining facade of St.Paul Cathedral is the most important historic heritage in Macao. In early 20th century, refugees poured into Macao, and built houses along the city wall at the back of the cathedral;and Chi Lam Wai,an unauthorized communal urban village rich in urban fabric and unique in landscape in this high-density city was formed.Different from the splendid cathedrals or plazas in the city's mainstream narrative, the preservation of Chi Lam Wai is a continuity of the daily life of a marginalized community, also of a vivid architectural culture. It is the physical culture of the common people, which plays an indispensable role in Macao's tourism as part of the city's identity as a place of East-West fusion. The proper development sequence and the humanistic respect emphasized in our present plan is also part of a necessary process for a civil society, working to establish the identity of Macao of its postcolonial times.
