We raised here a critique of both quantity and quality of public space in high-rise residential districts,a typically problematic issue in many "new town" developments in contemporary China.A survey was then conducted on dynamic community life in multi-story residential districts built in the 50's through the 80's,which provided inspiration and precedent for our proposal of a new housing prototype:the "Public Spaces in the Sky" for Multi - story Apartments. We transplant advantages of public spaces from those multi-story cases to high-rise developments, and created a prototype structure that achieves a comparatively very high PSR(public space ratio) while retaining a high FAR(floor area ratio). We expect that this prototype can provide abundant public spaces in the sky for every urban resident at his or her door, with reachable conveniences and facilities,an appropriate human scale, and diverse programming,as an architectural response to the public life of high-density dwelling in the future.
