Advanced metering infrastructure （AMI） is an important metering system for smart grid. It requires a communication network for collecting data from a smart meter, and for sending command and control signals to a smart meter. However, WiMAX （Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access） is the innovative broadband wireless access technology that is considered as a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of ＂last mile ＂broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL. In accordance with the performance of AMI, and combining with main features of WiMAX, the specific application of WiMAX in communication network of AMI is discussed, and the superiority of it is explored. The application will possess such advantages as broadband wireless access, long range, flexible architecture, high security, interoperability, etc.
