This study, based on the earthquakes which struck Japan and China' s Yunnan Province in the spring of 2011, compares the attitudes of certain high school students ( not only from the earthquake-hit Wenchuan, Sichuan Province, China, but also from those areas in China which were not stricken by earthquakes) towards those in earthquake-hit areas. The results show the following: (1) The high school students, whether from earthquake-hit Wenchuan, or from the areas which were not stricken by earthquakes, prefer to help those in the earthquake-hit areas in Yunnan Province rather than help those in the earthquake-hit areas in Japan. (2) Compared with those high school students from the areas which were not stricken by earthquakes, those from earthquake-hit Wenchuan show a significantly high level of empathy and intention to help those in the earthquake-hit areas in Yunnan, but they show insignificant difference in helping those in the earthquake-hit areas in Japan. (3) The degree of eontacting Japanese culture regulates the relationship between the empathy and the intention to help others; specifically, the more contact with Japanese culture, the greater hkelihood of helping those in earthquakehit areas in Japan.
