In ancient Rome, the woman was not so affectionate a mother to her young child as that in other areas in ancient world or modern society. Instead, she had less intimate or close relationship with her child who obviously was not the thing she cherished most. To her child, she was viewed primarily as a disciplinarian or authority to some extent although Rome was still under patriarchy. This forms a contrast with the stereotype which characterizes the mother as typically kind and gentle with tenderness and the father as typically severe and rigorous with authority.
