This paper gives a critical surrey of the western perspectives on the issue of 'author and author's intention', both traditional and modern, and affirms that from the 20th century contentions on this issue, we may draw some inspiration beneficial to our teaching of English and American literature. With a citation of some famous prose writings, poems and short stories for illustration, the author of the paper claims from his teaching experience that the treatment of both the author and author's intention should take into account the genre of the text as well as its distinctive feature and style.
