平汉铁路与近代中国大多数国有铁路一样,是借外债修筑而成。除了在建设阶段形成的外债,在经营过程中又积聚了大量的料债和内债。南京国民政府时期为整理债务作出了大量努力。外债对于平汉铁路的运营影响有限,对平汉铁路的经营有着重要影响的是料债。

Like other railways in moern china, Pinghan railroad was built by using the foreign loan. Pinghan railroad accumulated vast material debts and internal debts besides the foreign loan in construction period. Pinghan railroad made great efforts to liquidate and repay the foreign loan, material debts and internal debts in 1930s. The influence of foreign loan was limited, but material debts engendered great influence on the business of pinghan railroad.
