Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), an emerging broadband radio access technology, has attracted much attention from the whole telecom industry in recent years. Its main features are the high-speed transmission rate, large coverage, support for mobility, QoS guarantee and all-IP architecture. The technology fulfills the integration of packetized data, broadband access and mobilized terminal; therefore, it has a bright future for wide application. This lecture discusses WiMAX in four parts, and this part introduces the MAC layer and its QoS mechanism.
