也论中国多科性专业院校英文校名问题——与何自然教授商榷

随着我国高等教育的不断发展,理工类多科性大学日益增多。很多高校都在原来"institute of+专业名称"的基础上简单改为"university of+专业名称"。这种译法是否得当,何自然教授对此做了很多有意义的研究,认为"institute"直接改为"university"会产生歧义并提出了一些修改建议。但笔者从句法、语用语境或文化以及语义的角度进一步调查和研究,发现某些问题或现象有失偏颇,从而可推知文中所提供的某些修改建议让人质疑。旨在得到更多的学者、专家对中国高校译名的关注,加快我国教育部对高校英语校名的规范,从而抑制我国高校英语校名"五花八门"的局面。

With the development of Chinese tertiary institutions,more and more multidisciplinary universities dominated by science and engineering are being established.Based on'institutes of+professional names',many tertiary institutions are simply translated into'University of+professional name'.Is this appropriate.? Prof.He Ziran has done signifi- cant research and concluded that presenting the name of a university in this way may produce different meanings and proposed some modifications.However,through further study from the perspective of syntax,pragmatic context or culture and semantics,we find some issues or phenomena prejudiced,so we can infer that some modifications should be oppugned.Translating names using this method makes scholars and experts pay attention to the English names of Chinese tertiary institutions,but has urged the Chinese Ministry of Education to create a certain standard of the names and restrain the complexity of them.
