Thoughts Patterns between English and Chinese and Relative Target Language

思维和语言紧密相关。中国人和英美人的思维方式不同,汉语和英语对同一主题的表达方式也各异。因此中英文在篇章、段落和句子的结构安排上有很大的差异。在翻译过程中,对原文篇章和较长段落的思维方式,不可能、也不必要进行转换。但是,在翻译某些较长句子或较短句群时,这种转换是十分必要,而且是可行的。翻译实例说明,这种转换是提高翻译质量的可靠方法。

Thinking and language are closely interrelated. As Chinese thought patterns differ from Eoglish thought patterns, the Chinese tend to arrange their ideas on the same subject in quite different ways from the British and Americans. In the course of translating an article or a longer paragraph, it is unnecessary and impossible to transfer ideas from thought patterns of the source language to those of the target language. This transfer, however, is both necessary and possible in the process of translating certain long sentences or smaller sentence-groups. The example given shows that this transfer is one sure way to improve the quality of translation.
