《德伯家的苔丝》是托马斯·哈代的代表作。小说描写了社会以及其它力量把一个纯洁、质朴、美丽、善良而又勤劳的农村姑娘——苔丝逼得走投无路而沦为杀人犯,匆匆结束了自己短暂一生的悲惨故事。造成苔丝悲惨命运的因素主要是当时的社会环境、贫穷家庭、“撒旦”亚雷·德伯、“天使”安玑·克莱以及苔丝自身的原因。

Tess of the D’urbervilles is a masterpiece of Thamos Hardy .The novel gave a vivid account of the tragedy , in which Tess , a girl of purity ,beauty ,kindness and diligence , affected by social and other causes , became a murderer and came an early endof her life . The causes of her tragedy are mainly social circumstances , poorfamily , “saden” Allen D’urbervilles and “angel” Angel Clare , Tess own reasons .
