Because the police are in charge of dealing with illegal activities such as drug addiction, drug trafficking and prostitution, which are among the main transmission routes of HIV in China, unlike foreign counterparts, China's Ministry of Public Security is involved in the fight against the spread of the virus, in charge, among other tasks, of expanding knowledge about HIV among high-risk groups. The theme of the 17th World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, 2004, is 'Women, Girls, and HIV and AIDS' and, prior to that particular day, Women of China English monthly (herein after referred to as 'WOC') interviewed Shen Xuan, the only woman officer of the Coordination Group for Prevention and Control of AIDS under China's Ministry of Public Security.
