摘要
Harbin, located in China's far northeast corner, is not only the economic, political and cultural center of Heilongjiang Province, it is also one of the largest provincial capitals in China. Until the late 19th century, however, it was only a cluster of villages on the banks of the Songhua River. Its prosperity in modem times started late in the 19th century, when Russian people came to build railways in the region. Today, still, the Russian influence remains visible throughout the town and in the culture of its inhabitants.Another factor affecting Harbin people's lives is the climate. Winter in the city is tough... a bit like Harbin women, who are said to have a straightforward and vigorous temperament.
