摘要
The paper gives an overall review of the status of ESL/EFL writing instruction, with an emphasis on the impact of technology on writing teachers. The traditional role of ESL/EFL writing teachers is discussed by referring to the SLA theories and different ESL writing instruction approaches, which shed light on the multiple roles that writing teachers have played in the classroom and the fact that they are being neglected in ESL writing research. The paper then examines and discusses the impacts and implications that computer technology has brought to writing teachers in the aspects of paradigm shift in the philosophy of teaching, the pedagogical challenge and their relationship with students. The researcher also discusses pros and cons of pedagogical application of technology such as word processing, e-mail, and the Internet in writing classrooms and provides suggestions for teachers to make the best use of technology in their teaching and at the same time avoid the pitfalls that technology might bring into the classroom. The paper concludes by suggesting that further study be conducted on the effectiveness of CAI in teaching ESL/EFL writing from writing teachers' perspectives.
