The paper begins with a brief survey on the progress of optical fiber communications during the past 20 years. Then, it describes in detail the most important items in the modern optical fiber communication technology, such as the development trends of wavelength division multiplexing, fiber amplifier, new design of single mode fiber and optical transport networking.
