For nearly 3 decades, it has been very difficult in China to find the wild Saiga (Saiga tatarica), a national first-class protected animal. Traditionally, Saiga antler was used as the raw material in Chinese medicine, which was recorded as early as 1800 years ago. According to a recent survey, there are still about 40 kinds of Chinese medicine containing different proportions of Saiga antler requiring about 6000 kg of antler annually. However, the majority of antler required comes mainly from China's own stock, rather than from imported antlers. At present, China is strictly controlling the use of Saiga antler and trying to restore Saiga populations through measures of trade limitation, individual reintroduction and use of medicine substitutes.
