The Emergence and Development of Early Vimalaklrti Paintings in China

中国早期维摩诘变相的创造与展开,是一个内容不断丰富、表现形式逐步精细的由符号象征渐趋图像叙事的过程。北魏云冈时期、北魏龙门时期、东魏北齐时期、隋唐初期为中国早期维摩变发展的几个重要阶段。由于资料和研究视角的限制,前辈学者对于公元5世纪末至6世纪末这100年中维摩诘变相发展演变的脉络重视程度不够,阐述也不够清晰。因而,有必要在新的资料条件和学术研究的基础上,对这一段历史进行探讨。

The development of early Vimalak i rti paintings in China was marked by enriched contents, elaboration in the way of depiction, and a trend of narrative images. The Yungang and Longmen periods in the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Eastern Wei, Northern Qin, Sui, and Tang Dynasties were important stages in their development. Due to limited sources and point of view, previous scholars have not given much attention to Vimalakirti paintings of the late 5th century to the late 6th century. Therefore, little is known about the important history of the evolution of VimalakTrti paintings. It is necessary to renew the study based on new sources and studies.
