Plastic optical fibre is a serious rival to the conventional silica fibre in the huge market of local area networks. The development in polymer optical fibre is reviewed and its significance on future optical communication systems is discussed. The results from our work in the development of some special polymer optical fibres are presented by which the great potential of polymer optical fibres for the construction of various optical devices is showed.
