This paper presents calculations on the feasibility to separate toluene and HMDO by azeotropic rectification from cephalosporin waste, a homogeneous solution containing toluene and hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDO). With AC as azeotropic agent, the number of plates in the theoretical tower can be reduced from 53 required for simple distillation to 18 to make it possible to separate toluene and HMDO by rectification. This has been verified through experiments.
