During the natural weathering process of coal mine spoil, the release of clay mineral is very easy and rapid. Meanwhile, the release of clay minerals from coal mine spoil is a physical process. Vast amounts of fine clay minerals are released from coal mine spoil fill into soil structure and form compact layer. In our samples heavy metals are held as sulfides, not as ions, hosted in the clay mineral lattices. Under natural weathering condition, these sulfides are unstable. As S 2- of sulfides is oxidized into SO 2- 4, the crystal lattice of sulfides break down immediately and heavy metals are liberated from coal mine spoils. Because of the adsorption of both organic compounds and colloid of iron and manganese, only little of these metals are released to the environment and much of them are remained in the weathering products. Under close experimental condition, the oxidation of sulfides containing heavy metals is a surface chemical controlled kinetic process.
