Anexperimentaltechniquehasbeenemployedwhichusesradioactivetracerstomonitorthetransportofwaterthroughshales.Therateofwatertransportwasreducedgreatlywhenlow-activitysolutionswereinvolved.Moreimportantly,massflowwasobservedwhichcanonlybeexplainedasosmosis.
An experimental technique has been employed which uses radioactive tracers to monitor the transport of water through shales. The rate of water transport was reduced greatly when low-activity solutions were involved.More importantly,mass flow was observed which can only be explained as osmosis.
