On March 1, smiling leaders from 25 Asian and European countries lined up at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Thailand and shook hands together to herald the long march toward Asian-European partnership. The hand-shaking opened the first Asian-European Meeting to discuss political and economic issues. Chinese Premier Li Peng proposed that economic issues be the focus.
