This paper expounds the merits and demerits of the traditional school for TheBook of Songs and Li Sac and of its component the puzzle-out-obscure-meanings schoolfor Honglou Meng (Red Chamber Dream ) studies by examining their viewpoints on the fol lowing aspects: the relation between Conftlcian classics and its studies, the relation betweenallusion and the traditional studies of The Book of Songs and Li Sac, the relation betweenguessing riddles and the six categories of Chinese characters, the relation between symboliza tion and restoration, and the relation between the widening and mergency of visual field.
