Numerical simulation for temperature distibution and velocity of molten metal flow during filling stage in evaporative pattern casting (EPC) is studied. The results show that the pattern decomposition has a strong quenching effect on the flowing metal front and is the major factor which decreases the flowability of liquid metal. High permeability of coating layer can increase the metal flow velocity, meanwhile the coating layer with a small coefficient of thermal cond.uctivity can reduce the heat loss from the flowing metal to the sand, both of which are favorable to the increase of the flowability of liquid metal.
