Zhangjiagang, located on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and an important military town in ancient times, was previously under the. jurisdiction of Shazhou County. It became Zhangjiagang City in 1986, named after Zhangjiagang, a natural port in the area. With fertile soil, a good climate and sufficient rainfall, Zhangjiagang is a production base for high yield grain and good quality cotton. In addition, it is renowned for its variety of river food, chicken, peaches, grapes, wine, water melons and tea.
