Chinese President Jiang Zemin told visiting Eritrean President Issalas Afwerki on April 4 in Beijing that China wants to develop mutually beneficial economic co-operation with the newly independent East African State. The two governments signed agreements on Chinese loans to Eritrea and bilateral cultural exchanges. Issalas said his government had always regarded China as a reliable partner.
