Abstract Some features of a new generation of Chinese upper-air observation system have been described. The ra-diosonde can lead to accurate temperature measurement and sensitive humidity measurement- The pressure iscalculated by the heights measured by the accurate radar and the thermodynamic parameters measured by thesonde. The radar can provide accurate upper wind profile with fine stratification. A PC-80286 computer isused for terminal data processing. Realtime corrections on solar and long-wave radiation and atmospheric re-fraction are involved in the software. The system is very cost-effective
