PARASITIC INFECTIONS IN HUZHU TU AUTONOMOUS COUNTY, QINGHAI PROVICE

Abstract A survey was pursued in three pilot sites located at Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, Qinghai. Among 1 395 residents under fecal examination, 870 were infected with intestinal parasites, showing an infection rate of 62.4%. The 12 detected species of parasites and infection rates (in parenthesis) in residents were noted: Ascaris lumbricoides (57.1%), Trichuris trichiura 0.4% , Enterobius vermicularis (below 12 years old) 34.5% , Trichostrongylus orientalis (0.4%), Taenia solium (0.1%), Entamoeba histolytica (0.1%), Entamoeba coli (6.2%), Endolimax nana (0.9%), Iodamoeba buetschlii (0.1%), Entamoeba hartmanni 0.1%, Giardia lamblia 1.9% and Blastocystis hominis (4.3%). The infection rate was significantly higher in females (67.3%) than in males (57.5%). Generally, Hans showed higher infection rate (69.9%) than Tus(56.2%); however, the infection rate of Entamoeba histolytica was significantly higher in the latter than in the former ( P <0.001). The high prevalence of parasitic infections is related to the socioeconomic and natural conditions of the place.
