摘要 EVER since the late Ming Dy-nasty(1368-1644),storytell-ing,or pinghua,has been apopular form of entertainment in China.No doubt there have beentales told by the forlight from timeimmemorial on,but the person whoactually omvemted stprutelling as an art form in China was Liu Jingting,who gave his narrations straight,without singing.To emphasize hiswords and to get the audience’s at-tention,he accompanied his narra- tion with a small wooden block,which he banged on a hard sur-face.
