THE recent Mei Lanfang Gold Medal Competi-tion revealed the high artistic levels of contem-porary Peking opera performers.It was a bigevent in Peking opera and came on the heels of per-formances,two years ago,commemorating the 200thanniversary of the first performance of Anhui opera inBeijing.That first performance led to What later devel-oped into Peing opera.The success of the competitionshould be attributed to the participation of the manyartists and the tens of thousands of Peking opera lovers.It constitutes the newest chapter in the development ofChina’s Peking opera.
