GANSU PROVINCE in nor- thwest China retains threegrotto sites considered cul-tural gems of mankind.Mt.MaijiStanding 45 kilometers south-east of Tianshui City,Mt.Maiji iswell known for its ancient grottosdating from 384 to 417.The sitewas expanded in later centuries,making it one of China’s largegroups of grottos and an importantstop for Buddhists on the Silk Road.Cut into Mt.Maiji‘s 100-meter-high cliffs,the 190 grottos,linkedby plank roads,vary in width from31 meters to only 1 meter.
