On the basis of information obtained from studies on the isotopic compositions of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon, this paper mainly discusses the nature, provenance and evolution of the ore-forming
fluids of the gold deposits. It is suggested that the ore - forming fluids of gold deposits in various geological units may differ in nature and may have been derived from different sources. Studies indicate that the ore-forming fluids are dominated by magmatic water intermingled with a small amount of metamorphic water and meteoric water, and that the gold deposits should belong to polygenetic and compound deposits formed by superimposition of poly-hydrothermal fluids. In this paper the application of the isotopic compositions of hydrogen and oxygen as a guide to prospecting is also discussed.
