言辞语境(又称上下文)是语境诸分类中的一种,对释义起着十分重要的作用。本文借助范例,对言辞语境在消除歧义,排除模糊含义,确定指示语所指及补充省略意义等方面的作用加以讨论,并就英语阅读理解中如何利用言辞语境排除词汇障碍作些阐述。

Linguistic context, as one of the sub-classes of context, exerts a great influence on the interpretation of meaning. This paper attempts to offer, by means of exemplifications, a general elaboration of the role of linguistic context in eliminating ambiguities, removing vagueness, indicating referents of dcixis and supplying information omitted through ellipsis. Discussions arc also presented on how to make use of linguistic context to remove vocabulary obstacles in reading comprehension.
