The fluctuations of the Quaternary paleoclimate are characterized by the alternation of cold and warm periods. It is marked on the Loess Plateau in China by alternating loess and buried soils. The Loess Plateau is located in the East Asian monsoon zone and the evolution of its paleoenvironment is thought to be controlled to a large extent by the variations of monsoon intensity. The soil-loess sequence can be therefore considered a good record of paleomonsoon variations and to date, some work has been carried out in reconstructing the history of monsoon evolution.
