The impact on nutritional status and growth of children due to Schistosoma japonicum infection in Dongting Lake region was investigated through a case-control study. The paper reported Schistosoma japonicum infection had significant adverse influence on the nutrition status of children in ten indices, and demonstrated that schistosomiasis japonica was the most risky factor (RR = 6. 68) which affected the nutrition status of children. The results of 4 indices of nutrition and 7 indices of physical measurements in case group I were lower than those in the conrtol group, and the serum PA and Ca in case group I were also lower than those in control group. These results in our study indicated that the impact on nutrition status and growth of children was due to schistosomiasis infection in an endemic area.
