A Textual Research and Interpretation of “秃”,“充”,“失”,“佴”

本文对近两千年来众说纷纭、迄无定论的“秃”、“充”、“失”、“佴”四个从人的字进行考释,指出“秃”是籀文“(毛几)”的变体;充非省声字,本义为“充壮”:失的本义是“用鞭子打”;佴的本义为“强牵引”。

Opintons vary as to the explanation for the original meanings of the four Chinese characters with the ideographic determinative '亻'. This paper points out that '秃' is a written variety of belonging to zhouwen (an ancient Chinese calligraphy appearing earlier than xiaochuan of the Qin Dynasty); '充' is not a stroke-omitted phonetic indicator, but has 'sturdy' as its original meaning; the original meaning of '失' is 'to whip, to beat with a whip'; and the original meaning of '佴' is 'to drag forcibly'.
