Gambling in Rural Areas in Guangdong during the Late Qing Period and its Treatment

赌博是一种社会陋习,一直是困扰传统中国的社会问题之一。晚清广东乡村赌馆林立,赌博种类繁多,参赌人员广泛,给社会造成极大危害。对此,地方政府和乡民纷纷采取措施进行预防、治理,也取得了一时的禁赌成效,但终未能从根本上解决问题。到民国时乡赌愈演愈烈,成为地方治理的难题。

Gambling is an evil custom and has been one of the social problems troubling old China.During the late Qing period,gaming houses were ubiquitous involving numerous types of gambling and a large number of people,causing great harm to society.Local governments and villagers took various measures to prevent and treat gambling.They achieved some success but failed to fundamentally solve the problem.By the period of the Republic of China,gambling in rural areas intensified and became a thorny issue for local governance.
