Headed by Professor Xu Guangxian andNi Jiazan,the Laboratory of Rare EarthChemistry and Physics,Changchun Insti-tute of Applied Chemistry,Academia Si-nica,has been opened to foreign scien-tists since October,1987,and the firstplenary session of the Academic Commi-ttee was held in March,1988.There beganthe first batch of research projects.The highlights of the lab.involvesnew techniques for RE separation;synthe-sis of new RE compounds;exploration ofthe mechanism of solid phase reaction;
