A Preliminary Study to Mr. Chen Yuan's Early Works——In Memory of Mr. Chen Yuan's 110th Birthday

本文主要介绍现在收集到的陈垣先生从1907年至1913年在广东《时事画报》、《医学卫生报》、《光华医事卫生杂志》、《震旦日报》等报刊上发表的165篇文章。在这些文章中,他反对帝国主义列强的侵略,反对清政府的民族压迫政策,反对封建专制,反对愚昧迷信,反对故步自封。他的早期著作强调“历史观念”,多取材于元史,运用医学方法,处处从读者出发。他最终以历史学作为自己的专业,他的研究内容和方法,以及他的文风,都是他青少年时代的活动和早年著作的合乎逻辑的发展。

This paper introduces mainly Mr. Chen Yuan's works including 165 articles appeared on 'Current Affairs Pictorial' 'Medicine and Hygiene' , 'Guanghua Medical and Hygienic Magazine' , 'Zhendan Daily' all published in Guangdong province from 1907 to 1913. In those articles, he stands firmly against imperialist invasion, the policy of national oppression adopted by Qing Dynasty, feudal autocracy, ignorance and superstition and the attitude of confining oneself to old traditions. His early works, laying stress on historical standpoint, make full use of materials taken from historic book of Yuan Dynasty. He applies a kind of medical method to the material and always keeps the readers in his mind. Finally he regards 'History' as his specialty. The content and method and the lit -terary style of his studies are all logical development of his activities in his young days and his writings in early years.
