The musical scenes abound in book sixth of The Mill on the Floss and provide a discernible clue for the understanding of Maggie's aspiration for love and her final decision.According to Darwin's theory of sexual selection, music, just like the flashy plume and intoxicating songs of birds, originates from the need to please opposite sex in courting. In Eliot's novel, both Stephen and Philip resort to music to win the amorous favor from Maggie and Maggie is forced to choose between the gratification of passion and fulfillment of duty.Maggie can't help being lured by Stephen's enchanting song, but at the same time, she manages to stand firm for her moral principle. Her decision is both difficult and painful, yet it attests to the nobility of her mind and shows the moral choice of her creator,George Eliot.
