Cognitive violence in narrative occurs when one imposes his/her own cognitive schema upon others and inflicts on them physical and/or spiritual harm.Such kind of violence has not obtained due attention from literary critics.Ian McEwan,in his masterpiece Atonement, successfully explores this kind of violence and presents the danger of entering a fictional world as a cognitive dilemma. He suggests that treating reality with compassion and hope not only makes atonement but also offers the reader an access to truth.
