Intertextuality between "The Anniad" and Western Epic Tradition

Gwendolyn Brooks has staked out her position as a marginal writer by striving to give voice to the oppressed and silenced black.In ＂The Anniad,＂ Brooks justifies the writing of Black history by placing it in the epic tradition.Meanwhile,she uses the conventions of the blues to compose her epic and explores discursive strategies involved in African-American self-writing.This essay argues that ＂The Anniad＂ voices Brooks＇ hope for ethnic integration and equality through engaging in a dialogue with great epics of Western literature.
